Christmas Compendium Track 39:
Peak UK Chart Position: #37 in December 1993.
Christmas Chart Position: #37.
After a number twelve hit with “You’re In A Bad Way”, and a number 23 hit with “Who Do You Think You Are”, you may – at the time – have expected the third single of the year (and the only track in the festive chart to have ‘Christmas’ in the title) to rank somewhat higher than 37. But no, entering at 41 seven days previous, it stayed at its peak position for a fortnight. A shame, as it had all the right ingredients to be a much bigger hit, and is up there as one of my personal favourite Christmas records.
- The song has the Charlatans’ lead singer Tim Burgess sharing vocal duties with Sarah Cracknell.
- Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley actually was born on Christmas Day, in 1964.
- The Christmas top forty was announced on this day in 1993, which saw Mr Blobby climb back to the top spot, knocking Take That’s “Babe” down to two.
We plunder Top of the Pops (or, more precisely, TOTP2) for this performance – although if you’re feeling adventurous, this YouTube gem below was filmed at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in December 2012 sees the song performed as an encore, with Sarah Cracknell’s vocals immediately baulked by a giant balloon taking out the microphone and stand!
