Peak UK Chart Position: #24 in January 1997.
Named after their favourite character from the classic seventies film “Grease”, Kenickie were from Sunderland, and comprised lead vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Lauren Laverne, drummer Johnny X, lead guitarist and occasional lead vocalist Marie du Santiago, and bass guitarist Emmy-Kate Montrose. Formed in 1994, this was their third release and first hit to crack the top forty (debut “Punka” falling just short at number 43), although just eighteen months later they disbanded. Laverne has since forged a career as a television and radio presenter, and co-presents the BBC’s annual Glastonbury coverage.
“In Your Car” was their biggest single hit; they fared far better with their debut album “At The Club” which peaked at number nine, an album which also spawned follow-up single “Nightlife” (#27 in 1997), and included “Punka” which subsequently managed number 38 second time around. The original video for “Punka” was filmed in Laverne’s and Johnny X’s lounge (they are sister and brother).
They opened the first Top of the Pops of 1997, a show that also included Blur, Runrig, Kavana, and Terrorvision. Want to make it even more of a snapshot of its time? Spice Girls were number one..
