Peak UK Chart Position: #14 in March 1990.
Twenty-seven years ago today saw the first top forty appearance by Oldham’s Inspiral Carpets. It took a while for success to come – they had formed in 1983, went through several line-up changes, and had a certain pre-fame Noel Gallagher working as a roadie and technician for the group. Tom Hingley became lead vocalist in 1989, as the releases started making an impact on the lower reaches of the chart. Aided by the ‘Madchester’ explosion, “This Is How It Feels” debuted at number 22 on this day in 1990, being their first of eleven top forty hits for the group. Their biggest success ended up being 1992’s “Dragging Me Down”, which peaked at number twelve – though special mention should go to 1994 hit “I Want You” which featured Mark E Smith of The Fall and a legendary Top of the Pops performance.
Talking of the Pops, here is the group’s first appearance on the show, on March 15th 1990, where they rubbed shoulders with The Mission, Candy Flip, and Primal Scream. Drummer Craig Gill sadly passed away back in November 2016; he had joined the group in 1986 aged just 14.
