Peak UK Chart Position: #1 in November 1997
Why, you may well ask?
Well, on referendum day, it only seems right to feature the biggest selling single in the UK by a European act. Denmark, to be precise, is the home of Aqua, the vocalists being René Dif (bald) and Lene Nystrøm (not bald).
Hard to believe precisely how successful this record was. Four weeks at number one and 18 weeks in the UK top forty, selling (to date) 1.83 million copies, making it the FIFTEENTH biggest selling single of all time. It also topped the charts in (deep breath) Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Aqua went on to have their first three singles hit number one (still quite a rarity at the time); “Doctor Jones” and “Turn Back Time” being the follow-ups. They toured as recently as 2012.
Here’s their very first performance on Top of the Pops. Come on Barbie, let’s go party…
