Peak UK Chart Position: #5 in May 1995.
Birmingham-born Ali Campbell – born Alistair Ian Campbell – is on today’s birthday list, as he turns 58. He is best known as the frontman and founder of reggae band UB40 from its inception in 1978 to the present day, although acrimonious circumstances have led to there being competing strands of UB40 fronted by Ali on one side, and brother Robin on the other. Away from UB40, Ali has had decent solo success, first with the album “Big Love” in 1995, and then onwards from his 2007 album “Running Free”. He also found time to be a judge on ‘New Zealand’s Got Talent’ in 2012.
- As part of UB40, Campbell has sold over 70 million records, scoring three UK number ones amongst 39 top forty hits.
- All three of UB40’s UK number one hits and four of their five US top ten hits were cover versions.
- “That Look In Your Eye” is credited as featuring Pamela Starks on the CD single – but not on the charts. Starks also appeared on “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” by Robert Palmer and UB40.
- It was the first of three singles released from Campbell’s debut album “Big Love”. “Let Your Yeah Be Yeah” and “Somethin’ Stupid” (with daughter Kibibi) were the others.
