Peak UK Chart Position: #29 in March 1990.

Another relative obscurity today, far from being one of Marc Almond’s biggest hits – indeed, the only hit from his 1990 album “Enchanted”.

It had only been a year previous that he’d managed his first number one single, reinvigorating “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart” with original artist Gene Pitney, an absolute gem of a track. His biggest solo effort was still a year away, a cover of “The Days Of Pearly Spencer” (originally recorded by Northern Irish singer David McWilliams) which was produced by Trevor Horn. It peaked at number four in May 1992.

Almond is still very much active, having released an album last year, recently appearing with Burt Bacharach at the London Palladium, and performing at the Royal Festival Hall tomorrow night – an event which is sold out. He is celebrating his 59th birthday today.

Here’s a great performance of “A Lover Spurned” from the “12 Years Of Tears” concert at The Royal Albert Hall, September 1992.
