Happy birthday to Martin Fry (born Martin David Fry, in Stretford, Lancashire, England), he of the gold lamé suit, frontman of – and currently the man known as – ABC, who celebrates turning 59 today. Originally known as Vice Versa, who were then a rock band, ABC switched to synthpop and enlisted the help of Trevor Horn to produce their debut and chart-topping album – the iconic “Lexicon Of Love”. Four top twenty singles came from the album: “Tears Are Not Enough”, “Poison Arrow”, “The Look of Love” and “All Of My Heart”. Thirty-four years on, 2016 saw “Lexicon Of Love II” released, with it making number five on the album charts.
- “The Look Of Love” was their highest charting single in the UK, spending two weeks at number four, and selling over 250,000 copies.
- It topped the charts in Canada. and went top twenty in most territories, including America.
- Their 1987 album “Alphabet City” was also a top ten album, and spawned the single “When Smokey Sings”, which got to number 11.
- ABC will be performing at several festivals this year, as well as at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 6th.
