Peak UK Chart Position: #1 in October 2012.
It was back in 2005 that we saw the chart debut of Robyn Rihanna Fenty – better known simply as Rihanna – who celebrates her 29th birthday today. Born in Saint Michael, Barbados, she first charted with “Pon De Replay”, which got to number two both sides of the Atlantic, and topped the charts in New Zealand. Since then, the stats are fairly impressive: eight UK number ones and fourteen US number ones, 256 weeks in the UK top ten, global sales of over 230 million units, plus she has won eight Grammy Awards, twelve American Music Awards, twelve Billboard Music Awards, two BRIT Awards, and the inaugural Icon Award at the American Music Awards of 2013.
- “Diamonds” was the lead single from her seventh studio album “Unapologetic”, and topped the charts in over twenty countries.
- It was a million-seller both sides of the Atlantic; 3.5 million units in the US and 1.07 million in the UK (where it was the eleventh best seller of 2012).
- Her 2007 duet with Jay-Z on “Umbrella” ranks as the joint seventh longest running number one in UK chart history, at ten weeks – tying with Whitney Houston as the highest placed female on that list.
- She is about to launch her own line of make-up, calling it ‘Fenty Beauty by Rihanna’, with the lead product being a holographic lipstick.
Here’s her performance of “Diamonds” from ITV’s ‘The X Factor’ in 2012, where she could have done with an “Umbrella”. (Oh dear…)
