Peak UK Chart Position: #29 in November 1991.
One day after Madonna turned 58, so does another American female solo artist – although Belinda Carlisle has been around slightly longer, having originally found fame as singer with The Go-Go’s in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
It was 1985 when Carlisle decided to pursue a solo career, and had a couple of years of success in her homeland before “Heaven Is A Place On Earth” managed to top the charts both sides of the Atlantic. She never matched the success of that track again in the UK, but did have a further six top ten hits, with “Circle In The Sand” and “Leave A Light On” both peaking at number four.
She still performs, she still tours (currently as part of a Go-Go’s “Farewell Tour” which is halfway through its schedule), and she promises to release a new album early in 2017. You can follow her on Twitter too.
Here’s one of her lesser UK hits – scraping into the top thirty after the dynamic “Live Your Life Be Free” – although one of my particular favourites. I was going to opt for the Top of the Pops performance, but instead chose this from David Letterman’s show, where she looks and sounds particularly fab. There’s also an interview that follows, which I haven’t watched but by all accounts isn’t all that good…
