Sally Herbert and Caroline Buckley were two of Jimmy Somerville’s backing musicians in the Communards. In 1991, they – as the Banderas – spent a fortnight at number 16 with their only top forty hit. Its biggest success was in Italy where it reached number four.
The song samples a Grace Jones album track from 1989, entitled “Crack Attack”. Their album, “Ripe”, charted at number 40 in April 1991, and spawned two more singles – “She Sells”, which got to number 41, and “May This Be Your Last Sorrow” which failed to chart.
They appeared on a live Top of the Pops on March 21st 1991, alongside Jesus Loves You, Feargal Sharkey, and… er… Hale and Pace. I think it’s safe to say that this track stands the test of time much better than “The Stonk” does…
